I am currently in Chicago visiting Hostingcon. Chicago is an incredible city, it’s clean, the architecture is beautiful, the restaurants we’ve been to for diner (Shula’s and Funton on the River if I am not mistaken) were amazing, the river that crosses the city is a charm and it’s less than 2 hours from Montreal by plane. If you’ve never been to Chicago, you must add it to your future trip plans. A single walk in the city is worth the trip. As for Hostingcon, it’s not what it was in Las Vegas, but still it is the place to be if you are in the Web Hosting business.

Nice article with pictures and video from Montreal Teach Watch that visited us and the iWEB-HD datacenter. You can read it here : Montreal Tech Watch: iWeb, Quebec’s tech rising star. If you liked it and you would like to see some pictures of the other iWeb datacenter (iWEB-CL) I suggest you have a look at the latest panoramic datacenter pictures we posted here and here.

I have not been to iWEB-CL since a LOT of time, I can’t wait to see how the datacenter looks like not with all the new equipment that was added. We’ll surely post more pictures soon.

Power and Cooling are the big challenges of datacenter operators. We are beggining the second phase of our datacenter expansion at iWeb and cooling has been part of our most discussed preocupations. We have also been preoccupied with the noise that can be associated with the cooling equipments inside and outside the datacenter. I am waiting for new cooling solutions like HP seeks smarter data-center cooling | CNET News.com to come out and hope new interesting cooling alternatives will be available soon.

I am busy working on iWeb’s new web site that should be launched at mid-october but I wanted to let everyone know that I am proud to find iWeb in Netcraft’s Top 10 for August 2006. Netcraft monitors the network of 50 important web hosters and iWeb is in good position!

Some months ago I talked with a former Google employee that was telling me Google had 300 servers when he started working there. If I remember correctly, he said that six years later, they had 300 000 servers in something like 35 datacenters. We just launched our new datacenter here at iWeb and we will be able to host about 15 000 servers there, if everything goes as planned. Still far from Google’s needs ! I am writing this this morning because I came across this article : Google Seeks More Power - NY Times that I find quite interesting and that I wanted to share. That’s what I call huge datacenters ! I can’t wait to see iWeb buidling one like this.

TagCloud is an interesting project that allows users to build Clouds from RSS feeds. Back in January, I accepted to offer a little iWeb Server Sponsorship to the TagCloud team. They are just moving to their new iWeb servers now and they closed the service while they upgrade. I hope they will reopen soon, I will keep you posted! Meanwhile, they are showing a Top 100 list of the most popular RSS feeds used by their users, take a look.
